Competitive advantage is shifting from access to information towards an organisation's ability to make better decisions from it.

Every decade seems to arrive with a defining business movement.
During the 1980s, organisations focused on quality. The challenge was learning how to manufacture more consistently and eliminate waste from production. In the 1990s, attention shifted towards globalisation, enterprise systems and process standardisation as organisations sought to coordinate increasingly complex operations across international markets.
The first two decades of the twenty-first century were characterised by digital transformation. Organisations invested heavily in cloud computing, enterprise platforms, analytics and connected technologies in an effort to digitise information and automate workflows. More recently, artificial intelligence has become the dominant narrative. Almost every industry is now exploring how generative models, machine learning and automation might reshape knowledge work.
Each of these movements has delivered meaningful progress. They have improved productivity, expanded access to information and transformed the capabilities available to organisations. Yet despite these advances, one challenge has remained remarkably consistent.
Organisations continue to struggle with making timely, confident and well-informed decisions.
Projects are delayed despite real-time dashboards. Sustainability commitments fail to translate into operational outcomes despite increasingly sophisticated reporting. Innovation initiatives generate promising ideas that never scale beyond pilot programmes. Executives often have access to unprecedented quantities of information while simultaneously expressing less confidence in the decisions that information is intended to support.
This is not because organisations lack intelligence. Nor is it because they lack technology.
It is because most organisations have spent the past thirty years optimising information rather than optimising the systems through which decisions emerge.
I believe we are entering a new era in organisational design.
Not the age of artificial intelligence.
The age of Decision Intelligence.
